Chapter 7.2: GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO
Holy Family Catholic School
Teacher: Kathy Pike

Sarah B.
The best thing in my life is that I have a good education. I'm happy that I have an education because when I grow up I can get a good job. I also enjoy spending time at school with of my friends and my teachers. I'm glad this school is here and that we have books to help us learn many different things. The teachers are very smart and they help a lot.
I wish that everyone in the world could also get an education. I think that their schools should be just as good as mine is.
I would like to help other countries have schools for all their children. I would donate money to Free the Children to help build schools and give them food and clothing. I hope that someday every child in the world will have a good education.

Hello, I am 11 years old and I live in Grand Junction, Colorado. When I think about freedom, I think about the freedom of others, and how to help them gain that freedom. I also think about how fortunate I am to live in a place where I do not have to worry about the safety of myself and my family. Safety is very important, to every country.
On September 11, 2001 our country was robbed of our safety. Or so many people thought. Actually, it brought us closer together and in some ways it helped us gain the one important thing we needed, unity. Unity helps our country form our individuality. This is important too because without our respect for each other's inividuality, we would be like some other countries that have a dictatorship.
On that day of terror, the people of the United States came together and helped the people that lost loved ones. After that day, people showed patriotism in the many small ways such as U.S. flags on their cars, and seeing and thanking their family for just being there. The United States of America walked taller after that day because they rejected the hate and brought more hope back to the country.
I hope that someday people would understand what others feel like. If this could happen, terrorism would stop. Also wars would stop. Because in that simple moment, people would understand each other and people would trust each other the way you would trust a true friend.

Things can happen when you least expect them to. A couple of weeks ago, there was a bomb threat at my school. I didn’t know about it until we were playing kickball outside. When I heard what had happened, I was upset, but figured that nothing could hurt me or my family. I was safe, but it didn’t seem like it. My principal was very sad and upset. She looked like she couldn't believe what had happened, and neither could I. Now everyday, I watch my back checking to see if something is happening.
War and violence is another problem we have today. Some people are still fighting for land. People are talking like we might go to war with somebody else. There were sniper attacks in Washington and nobody can forget about September 11th. When thousands lost their lives for our country. I think fighting or dying for our country is the best honor you can get. This can be scary but at least you know you died for your country.

I want my family to have a good life, so they can live longer.
I want to live longer. I want to have a good life, but in order to have a good life you have to be healthy. Going to school and getting a good education in is important. Helping your family around the house and getting a good job to make money for you and your family is also important. People should talk about drugs and how to stop them because drugs kill a lot of people. You should live a day in different states and see how drugs are polluting them.

Zack C.
Quality of life is defined by a number of things like my freedom, house, family, wealth, and our military.
If I could change something to help out the future I would change pollution. I would make a solar powered car that took any light and amplified it so the battery would never run out.
I have a good life because my parents help me, cherish me, and give me hope of a good future. They always support me like a loving Shepard to his sheep. If I had the choice to live another life I would reject it. My parents love because they spend a lot of money on me, they give me pets and around Christmas time presents. I’m glad I live the life I do.
I also have freedom. I can also be in the air force but if I live in another country I would have to get the Job they gave me. I can also do whatever I want to if it isn=t breaking the law.
I am thankful for my house that projects me, my wealth that gives me stuff, my milllitary that projects the people, and my spirit that enriches me. I might not have the biggest house, or the most money, but I have A great family, A God that watches over me, and a spirit.

When I grow up, I would like to make a difference in the world. For example, I want to possibly start another organization like Catholic Outreach for those who are homeless or hungry. Along with the Catholic Outreach, I would like to start a money collecting device. There would be collection boxes all over the city or town that people could put money in. If people found loose change on the ground, they could put in the box. All of the money collected would go to those who need it. This would help other Catholic Outreaches purchase more food and clothes. My plans in the future will hopefully help reduce poverty. I also hope that when I do this, other Outreaches around the country and possibly the world will start to do the same thing. This will help our community very much.
The world could use more medical care and hospitals. If there were more medical care and hospitals around the world, there wouldn’t be as many homeless people because many of poor, homeless people are developmentally disabled and are unable to care for themselves. The developmentally disabled people could then go to the hospitals to get the medical attention they need. It would be great if the world could change so more people could have jobs and be cared for.

My favorite parts of life are my cool friends, my loving family, and my freedom. Most people have family, friends, and freedom, some people don’t. Who knows life is like a box of cereal, sometimes you get a sticker, sometimes you get a car. Although I prefer the car, stickers are still cool, especially scratch and sniff. The thing is that you always get a prize.
Life is awesome. Although I personally think that sleep is an upside. Sometimes people think that life isn’t worth living. Imagine what it would be like to sleep through life. Although it would be easy, it would be boring. Sometimes life isn’t all roses and daisies, and we have to learn to live with it. Recently we had the terrrorits attacks and its something we have to live with and build from.Everyone was scared and its something we have to live with. "United we stand" is a motto we all have to adapt to.
The thing I would change if I could would be the sence of insecurity in America. Together we can build a better America. Sense the attacks, many people feel insecure. If I could I would build a time machine and stop the attacks from happining. I think that we need time to get over the attacks and mourn for those who died. Then together we will fight against terrorism.
That's just how I feel. You may have different oppinions but that's what makes America as great as it is. I think that together we can make the world a better place. People everywhere need help, and by helping them we are already making the world a better place.

It used to be great, until I understood that we can be an evil people. All of us in the world can be nasty to each other. Just under a month ago we had a bomb threat at our school. Most of us, including me, were crying. We had enough of September 11th; we don’t need anymore terror in our world, let alone in the USA.
At least America, where I live, is a free place, that’s what I love about the USA. I love how my family and friends are safe and free. Some people suffer and are afraid of their leader(s). Sometimes, they don’t want to do what is asked of them and sometimes they’ll suffer if they speak out. That is also a good thing about America, we have freedom of speech, and no longer can we be arrested for speaking about something that someone else thinks is wrong. We can let somebody know how we feel about a situation, and we should do just that.
I don’t want anybody to take away our freedoms, or our safety. Although after September 11th, I’m not so sure about the safe part of America. That is why I get so scared so easily. I don’t want that to happen again, meaning terror. My family, friends, and I cried so hard when we saw the Star Spangled Banner on TV. Now I’m happy that it has been more than a year, and they still haven’t destroyed our spirit or our patriotism. They never will, not while I’m around!

Sometimes I don't realize how lucky I am to live in the U.S. There are still many people who are homeless and hungry, but in some other countries many more people are homeless, hungry, and hopeless. I take it for granted that we get clean water, have child labor laws, and freedom.
In some other countries, people are starving, with no jobs or places to live. If I had the power to change this, I would make sure that these people got jobs. So then they could support their families, instead of us doing nothing to help them. Also, I would stop the wars, because the more wars there are, the more peolple have to abandon their homes. With peace in the world, more people would have homes and jobs.
As you can see, the world is not a perfect place. It still needs many changes, and much help. We cannot change everything, but if we started changing the world now, we could help a lot. I am glad to live where I do, and hope that other people, one day, can experience this too.

Colton D.
Since many people live hard, sad lives, I am very fortunate to have such a good quality of life. First, I live in Grand Junction Colorado, U.S.A. I have friends and freedom that I enjoy. Everyone takes this for granted, but we are actually very fortunate to have all of this. My parents care for me, feed me, and give me things that let me have fun. Lastly, I'm in a safe community where I am out of danger for the most part and my parents don't have to worry about me.
Since there are countless problems in the world, there are many things I would try to change. The first thing I would try to change would be to prevent violence and have world peace. Another thing I would do is go and talk to people that are poor and living on the streets. The next thing that I would change in the world is the environment. People in the U.S. are very fortunate to have such a clean environment and closed sewers and it would be nice if everyone could be able to have this. The next deed I would do is to try to stop pollution. I would try to come up with an innovation that would prevent all of the toxic chemicals from entering the air that make us sick and eventually shorten our lives. The next thing I would try to change is that everyone in Grand Junction would receive a Christmas present that they value and no one would be left out. I would do this by setting up an organization at a church that I belong to. Finally, I would try my best to be kind to others so everyone could live in and have a peaceful environment to live in and be safe. To sum it up, because of all that I have been given, I hope th be given the oppurtunity to help others to live a better life.

Benjamin F.
Life is God's greatest creation. To live we need food, water, and shelter. Without these things, life would not exist. There are many things I take for granted. I've never gone hungry in my life, unlike many other people in the world. My water is extremely clean and fresh. I do not have to worry about getting sick, but in some countries people are not so lucky. There is not much violence where I live, except brother and sister squabbles. Our towns our very safe and we do not have to protect our friends and family like some countries do. Most of our schools are very secure. Unlike other schools in the world where terrorism is common, we do not have to worry about those things. Our air is getting dirtier and dirtier as time goes on because of pollution.
I could change these things by helping the environment. I can pick up trash, carpool, and ride my bike more often. I can send my food to the people around the world. I can send my old clothes to charity for the people in need of clothes. I can give money to the poor people. I can also send money to their schools to help them get a better education. I can help out at certain organizations that do things for people living in poverty around the world. With all the wonderful talents that I've been given, I can help the world, in the most extraodinary way.

What defines my quality of life is my lovable family. Another thing that defines my quality of life is the freedom that I enjoy and that I can do anything.
One thing that I would change now to effect my future is that there would be less pollution in the air around the world. Another thing is the violence. I hope that in the future there would be less violence and more happiness around the world. The last thing I would change would be the education that kids need to get a better job and have a joyful life.
How would I go about changing them is that for pollution we should all be able to breath in fresh air and let out fresh air. So instead of having factories pumping out black smoke into our air we should use it wisely. That also counts for cars and how they also pump gas out into our air. The second thing was violence and how we should be careful at what we are doing like for example, there are a lot of people that are ill because they have been smoking a lot. Finally, the last thing was the education and how everybody around the world should get a good education from home or from a school. If some places don't have a school, we might want to lend some money to build one like we did in Nicaragua. Our students built a school. We also gave the teacher a salary to teach these kids to read, write and maybe a little math too. These are the things I would change in my future.

One thing that defines my quality of life is that I have a family. I am thankful for having a home and a loving family. Another quality in my life is that I am free. I am glad that I do not have to work on a farm. I am lucky that I can go to school and not have to support my family by working. I am thankful that I always have plenty of food to eat and clean water to drink. One other thing that defines my quality of life is that my parents have never let our family go hungry.
One problem that I would change is hunger. I would set up a business in a country that has problems with hunger. I would have food shipped to that country. I would also shelter the people that do not have a home. I would build a building that takes homeless people off the streets. I would feel really good that these things would benefit those less fortunate than me.

I am 11 years old and I live on the outskirts of Grand Junction. If I had the power to change some of the things that would affect my future, there would be many. I would change my relationships with my brother and parents. I would alter the world so everyone would get along and no one would be discriminated against, and I would change how I look at life.
I would change my relationship with my brother by making it 100% better. I wouldn’t tease him as much, and I would help him more. I would think about what I said to him and others, and make sure what I said wouldn’t upset them. I would help him with his homework and I would try not to get frustrated. I think this would change our relationship greatly.
If I could change my parents’ relationship with me, I’d make it better, too. If we had fewer arguments, we’d get along better. If we got along better and had just one less argument, our family would be much happier.
If I changed how I look at life, it would also be for the better. I would look at it with a more humble attitude. I would also adapt to be a more understanding person and become more patient. This would be a big improvement for me.
I would also modify the world so everyone would just get along and treat each other equally, and no one would be discriminated against. There would be no terrorists and no criminals. Everyone might have disagreements, but they would treat each other as equals. People would love and care for each other, even though they might be strangers. This would definitely create a better sense of security.
These are only some improvements that I would make, but they are the biggest. Building better relationships and making a new view of life will take time, but someday I hope I accomplish these. I also hope I relieve someone of a burden they carry to make their life easier.

In America I enjoy: freedom of how many activities I go to each week, what I do with my money, whether I spend and save, how often I go on camping trips with the Boy Scout Troop 318, and when I ride my bike. These are the freedoms I enjoy and all other children should be able to enjoy then as well. Somethings I would change are studying harder so I can get good grades in middle school and high school. This will help me get into college easier. I want to go to college and graduate with the best degree I can possibly manage to receive. This would make getting a good job a lot easier. Freedom is something that I enjoy and I feel that all the other children in the world should be able to enjoy the same freedom as I do. Others don't get to enjoy the same freedom for various reasons. A positive future would decrease the population of poor people in the World by at least 50% of what it is today. If I had the power to change it, I would make a college education available to everyone. Everyone should have the chance to go to college and get a degree. They would have few months after they graduate to start paying off their college tuition. To conclude, the world is not fair everywhere.

Why dose the words “the quality of my life.” matter to me, well some of them are?
My life in general has a lot to do with other people’s life like my mom and dad. People help me through every day obstacles .Such as friend problems and just any other kind of problems I have. When I have bad situations my friends help me through it.
When people discriminate agent I become very angry because I am very Irish and if they make fun of people for having different skin they should be making fun of me .Its like when the civil rights movement happened every one had to take a day or two to get adjusted to it . They should never have the slavery thing in the first place. When god created us all he said we are all = and we should treat each other that way.
In conclusion, life is about your smiles and cries, that’s all you have and no one can take that away from you.

Hi, my name is Jenna P. I am 11 years old and have 1 biological brother. I live in Grand Junction, Colorado and go to HFCS. My brother is as annoying as anything but besides that I have a pretty darn good life. My parents are divorced and live in different towns. I love living in America and having the rights that I have. In the U.S.A, people don’t judge us on our gender or our race. A year and a half ago our country changed, and the hearts of people changed. On September 11th, four terrorist attacks happened. That day thousands of people died because of a terrorist organization. The twin towers collapsed along with our hope. A lot of families lost dads, moms, or brothers and sisters. We all realized we were not ready for this and did not want this to happen. But sometimes you don`t always get what you want and thats what we learned on September 11, 2001.

Adrianna P.
Hi, my name is Adrianna and I'm twelve years old. Having fun, being myself, and hanging out is what I love to do. I go to Holy Family and play sports. I'm in 6th grade and have many cool friends. I hang out with my family too! I love my life beyond belief.
When I say "Having fun," I mean it. I love doing fun things like school and just doing things I enjoy. Speaking of school activities, we have a school dance coming up. The theme is winter, Santa, and other Christmas ideas. Man, this is what I like to do.
When I say," Hanging out with my family," I mean going shopping with my mom and fishing with my dad. We do cool stuff and they take me places even when they don't feel good. My parents are cool. Looking back on everything they've done for me, it makes me smile.
Sports and friends are another part of my daily life. I barely have time to go shopping, but somehow I find time. Activities keep my family and me going. Cool life, right?
As someone once said," Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get next." It is so true in this day and age. This day and age is awesome too. Life is short live it fully.

"I just like to live". I say it every morning. I think that people in the United States are spoiled, we can do pretty much anything we want. But then you realize that it is not like that everywhere. Ever since 9-11, people are more optimistic, and more afraid. Our proud chest has deflated, but this makes us stronger. It shows we are strong and nothing can break us apart. The people in Iraq do not have the freedom that we Americans do. If we could just understand each other, I think the world would be a safer place. If someone just took the time to consider how other people thought about a situation, such as the War on Terrorism. I think the world is going to be a good place in the future with our youth to come.

Kyle R.
My name is Kyle. I am glad I live in the USA because I have freedom of religion. This is important to me because I would rather pray to the one and only God. The USA lets you choose your own religion unlike in some countries where you might be punished for not worshiping their chosen gods.
Also, I am fortunate enough to have fresh, clean water. Many people in other parts of the world do not have clean water. The water they drink is dirty but it’s all they have to drink. Some countries dump oils and other materials into the drinking waters and that is causing people to become sick and sometimes die. Men, women and children die every year in many other countries because they do not have access to safe drinking water. This is another reason why I feel lucky to live in the USA.
Another reason that I am glad I live in the USA is because of my access to food. The USA has many different types of food and the supply is ample. Many people suffer from hunger in other countries because the price of food is too high or because the country doesn’t have good enough supply. In some countries, people live on less then one dollar a day. I feel that everyone should have equal access to abundant food, water, and freedom of religion. This is why is feel I’m fortunate to live in the USA

Have you ever felt like you were trapped? Trapped in a dream for all eternity. That is how I feel. Everyday something bad happens. For example, a couple of weeks ago, there was a bomb threat at my school. Another problem I have is that my family and friends look to me for all the answers. Sometimes I don’t have the answers and things go wrong, and I’m only 11 years old. But all I have to do is picture good things and my day is good. I know I’ve hit rock bottom, but the good that comes out of that is that I can only go up. The more I picture good things the better my day goes. Maybe if I continue to do this, my future will be awesome. All I want for the world is no depression. We all see really bad times and sometimes we dwell on them. We didn’t make the decision for these things to happen. All we have to do is decide what to do with the time given to us. If we figure out what our mission in life is life would be great.

My family has a huge impact on my life for many reasons. They care for me when I am sick. They also comfort me when I am sad or lonely. If I could change something in the future, it would be to help other families around the world to come together.
Food and water are important in my life. They are importantimportant because it keeps me alive. I don’t have to worry if the water I drink is polluted and I don’t have to worry about the quality of food I eat. Some people in the world have dirty water to drink and rotten food to eat. If I could change something in the future, it would be to supply good food and fresh water to everyone in the world.
In conclusion I would try to give these gifts to other people.

Rachel R.
My friends and my family are very important to me. They are always around. It is good to keep my religion and stay true to my God.
If I could change something, it would be to stop violence and maintain peace. I would like it if all people would be nicer to each other. Then it would be better for everyone. Children would be more safe and it would be easier for them to live without fear. If adults could learn to be nicer to each other, countries may not have as many wars. We would all be safer from the terrorist attacks happening now and those that may happen in the future. It would be better for my future and others future because children around the world would be safe and there would be less to worry about.

I have a good life. Some of the things I take for granted are hospitals, schools, money, and food. If I didn't have acsess to good hospitals, I myself could have died 3 times. If we didn't have a school, I would probably not even know what 2+2=?. If my family didn't have any money, I would be living on the streets or could be dying. I'm so grateful that I get three meals a day, and not one a week. I thank God for all he has given to me every day. Sometimes I don't even think about the hungry and the homeless. I have a wonderful house and I love my bed and toys. But then, I think of others that are sleeping with newspaper covered over them. It makes me feel like a princess. When you think about it, why can't you help these people that do not have a good quality of life? You can help by praying, and giving. Thank you Lord, for my special Life.

When I hear quality of life, one thing I think about is my family. I think about my family because they are really important to me. Another thing I think is my home. A home is a roof over your head that keeps you warm in the winter. Also it is a place for you to sleep. Another quality of life is my personal safety in the world.
Some of the things that I would change now, will effect my future a lot. One thing I would change is my grades. If I could get really good grades all the time I could get a good job. Also I would build schools in Guatemala, so kids can get through all of the grades. Another thing I would do is give them a new home.
One thing I would change is my grades. I would change them by listening to the teachers and by getting my homework turned in. By building the schools in Guatemala, and also giving supplies for the schools, I would help more people get an education.

I enjoy a good life. These are some of the things that define my life for me: I am free to express myself. I have a family and a home. My family loves me and supports me. I am able to get a great education at a Catholic school. These things are important to me and help me have a better life.
There are several things I could do to change my future and the world's future. I could work harder in school so I could have a better life, home, and job. That would help me enjoy my life more. I could do this by getting involved in more academic school activities. I could also start paying more attention to God. It would help me keep my life on track. I could do this by going to Mass more and paying attention to the Gospels and beliefs that I learn. There are also changes I would like to see in the world. For example, I would like to have everybody be equal everywhere. We could do this by seeing everybody's good qualities. We could look beyond their race or color. We need to see people for who they are.
In conclusion, life is important to me. I am looking forward to having a great life. Having a spiritual life is also important to me. I need to stay close to God so He will guide me through life and help me do what is right so I can have an impact on the future.

Hello, I am 11 years old and I live in Colorado. I practice my faith and enjoy freedom. My faith grew stronger on the day of the terrorist attacks, 9-11. The whole United States was changed by the attacks. We all spoke of the words in our national anthem "For the land of the Free and The home of the Brave". War and terrorism are the main destroyers of our world. They need to be stopped. All the young kids in the world should be taught this stuff is bad. Another thing that tears our world apart is pollution. We can all help by picking up trash and not throwing it on the ground. Other forms of pollution can make holes in the ozone and could cause global warming. Pollution is bad, if you try to help, I will also. Did you know the U.S. is the richest country in the world? It is. The U.S. has a lot of money. Some of the people want more even though they have enough. They aren't thinking about the poor in the world. If they gave them some of their money, half of the poor would be average people. Here is a statement that can help you remember no matter how much you have you'll live as long as any one else. "He who dies with the most toys is still dead."

I live in Grand Junction, Colorado in the United States. I have many freedoms. I am very lucky that I can worship any God that I want. Not many people in the world have this freedom. We can help them learn about God and faith through letters and the Internet. I have a good education, more than enough food every night, a soft bed, clean water, and a home.
I feel bad for all of those kids who don't get an education or have no home to go to, or sometimes don't even have food. To help, I could give money to programs like Free the Children, and Catholic Outreach.
If I could change the world, I would help all children get the things that they need to survive. I would also change the forced labor of children. I could do that by not buying the products that they make and by letting people know that there is forced labor and we need to do something about it. Every person can have an impact in making this world a better place to live.
