In other countries in our world there is a very big problem called child labor. That means that in other countries some children are forced to go to work or to go to war for their country. This is dangerous because a lot of children die in the wars. Also, children do not get an education. I think this cruel and very unfair. This problem must be stopped.

Some of the information I have gathered will show you how bad child labor really is. One of the worst things about it is that the children get paid little or no money at all. For example, a young girl in south India worked 16 hours a day and only received a small wage of $1.30 a week. Basically, every child with this problem gets little or no education because they are at work or war. There are probably more children with this problem than you think. If you can believe it there are over 250 million children with this problem all over the world!

One way we could try to help is to push the leaders of our countries and the U.N. to try their hardest to help put an end to child labor. Maybe if we try together we can help reduce the amount of child labor all over the world. Hopefully in years to come these actions will take place.

This is a fictional story. One day my friend and I were walking around the center of Wayne, when an eight-year-old girl named Kirsten came up to us and said, “Can I have some money?” I said, “What do you need it for?” Kirsten said, “I am homeless and hungry.” My friend and I brought the little girl into Pie in the Sky and we ordered a pizza and sat down.

Then Kirsten began her story. “We were all a happy family until my father died and we didn’t have enough money to support us, so we ended up in a homeless shelter with no money at all. Then we went into a shelter and lived there for quite a while.” She went on to tell us about her shelter. She said 38% of the people there are children. She also said that there between 444,000 and 842,000 men, women, and children in the U.S. who are homeless. The problem's not getting any better. The homeless population continues to increase. I asked, “How can I help?” She said, “You could donate to Philabundance or you can take time to help Project Home and Project Rainbow. Another way to help the homeless is to donate your time to listen to what people have to say, and try to help provide their basic necessities in life.”

So later on that night I starting to think of ways I could change their quality of life. I could help homeless shelters, give to charity, sponsor a family, and give them a chance to find harmony by helping them get a job, trying to help them start a new life. It is important to not judge the homeless, because it could happen to anyone. They need help and they’re not any different from us. A couple weeks after helping Kirsten I went walking around the center of Wayne and I found a homeless boy saying, “Please give me money.” So I did. Why? Because it is important to support others and to bring peace into their lives.

Global warming is when all the glaciers in the North and South Pole melt turning both poles to water. It starts with the greenhouse effect. I think it would be very scary to live when it happens because all you would see is water. Thankfully, it won't happen for thousands of years, but I think we should take it seriously because the water at the poles has already started to melt.

The sea level may be slightly higher than predicted during the next century based on new information gathered by an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change. This information came from a climate scientist who analyzed the primary data. Estimated sea level rise is 7 to 39 inches. The IPCC predicted a warming of 3.6 to 9.9 degrees Fahrenheit. This will reduce acid rain and other surface air pollution.

Global warming may be a big problem, but there are many little things we can do to make a difference. Most of us can do our part to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that we put into the atmosphere. Many greenhouse gases come from things we do everyday. As we know the gases trap energy in the atmosphere and make the Earth warmer.

You can save energy by sometimes taking the bus, riding a bike, or walking. Save electricity by turning off lights, the television, and the computer when you’re through with them. You can help a lot. Planting trees is a fun and a great way to reduce greenhouse gases. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, from the air. I hope I taught you something.

I hope the quality of life gets better because the tobacco companies will end project S.C.U.M very soon. Project S.C.U.M has been going on for several years. It is the Camel cigarette company’s plan to target the poor people and teenagers. Because of this, more Americans will get addicted to nicotine and become daily smokers. Around one third one third of them will die of tobacco-related diseases. If one million teenagers and homeless people become smokers, then can you think of how many people it would be if we counted all the smokers from all around the world?

That’s got to be at least ten million people. This plan will also cause people who don’t have enough money to buy cigarettes to start shoplifting resulting in the police to have to work twice as hard trying to catch these people.

Did you know when people smoke beaches are being hurt, because people are to lazy to put the cigarette butts in the trash can? They just throw them on the ground and eventually the wind takes them to water or a beach. The animals think the cigarette butts are food and, soon enough, it burns up in that animals stomach or the animal chokes on it. Project S.C.U.M has increased this process by 20 % over the years it has been running. If it keeps going it will soon increase it by 40, then 60, then 80, and finally 100% and our beaches will not be fit for swimming or playing.

As you can see, the results of smoking have a very bad effect on our world. We need to work together to prevent people from smoking and to save both our planet and our people.

Child labor is a worldwide problem. Child labor is when kids work for a minimum amount of pay. This occurs on six of the continents and is an old problem. There are some families where up to three generations have been child laborers.

Child laborers work because they are forced. Children choose to work in this system only eight percent of the time. Child workers can be found as soldiers, farm workers, miners, fishing men, and in factories including clothing and sports equipment.

This problem started because manufacturers take advantage of the child worker at a lower pay rate so that they can make more profit on their product. Since then, people have started to force kids to work. When kids work they are deprived of education, proper healthcare and nutrition, sleep, and the fun of being kids. But the major result is that kids in this system grow up thinking less of themselves and not believing that they have any power, voice, or ability to change what happens around them. Because of this, they grow up accepting this system and even continuing the problem. We can stop this problem by letting kids know that it's not okay for them to be taken advantage of in the workplace. We can teach kids and their parents the value of education. The best way that we can have an impact on this problem is to confront companies that use child laborers rather than adult workers.

Child labor should be stopped because it is harmful to our society and underestimates the value of a child's life. We can help by making government and shoppers aware of the products that are made by children and the sad effects of child labor on society and our world’s future.

People must recycle in order for our earth to decrease pollution. People throw away disposable items which can be recycled. We need to educate people on what can and can’t be recycled.

Recycling is good when we use the program correctly. The world is running out of dumps so we need to re-use items such as paper, cardboard, aluminum, metals, glass, plastics, oil and rubber. In some communities waste is being used for electricity. Some communities have recycling days where they collect recyclable items. The boy scouts is one group and, in my county, the Household Hazardous Waste. ‘What You Should and Should Not Do’ is a brochure handed out when you get rid of hazardous waste and it is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Environment Council. I feel educating people on recycling is the key to a successful recycling program.

People need to buy things made out of recycling material. When we buy things we need to read the labels. In the brochure I mentioned above they state that people need to read labels, buy only what they need, stop throwing trash out of car windows, use safer substitutes when available, and read and follow directions on how to use a product and dispose of the container. Maybe children can be educated to all of this in a science class or a service project. I feel plenty of material is available through our town, so it is up to my family to read this material and apply what they are telling us.

Educating the world on recycling is so important. Families must educate themselves on recycling, landfills, special hazardous waste programs and waste water treatment plants. We need to think about what our world will look like in ten years.

I hope more and more people recycle and our world will be a better place because of this. Recycling is a great program when used in the right way. Americans are the best source of recycling if educated.

Animal Cruelty is a serious problem in the world. Too many animals in the world are endangered. It's just plain wrong to kill an animal for its beauty, or if you want tusks from an elephant. In my opinion, all animals should be treated with the respect, kindness and thoughtfulness they deserve.

Animals can be abused in other ways, too. If animals are left at an animal shelter or pet store too long, they are killed because people don’t want them. Some animals are left outside at night, even in very cold temperatures, with no food or water. Some people might neglect to feed their pets and then they become thin and starve.

Even though laws are being made, people still continue to hunt, poach, and kill animals for things we do not need. My country is rich and makes much money from animals and what they give us. They are a wonderful thing in the environment, and we should cherish them always.

These are some of the reasons I am against animal cruelty, and you should be, too.

Oil spills cause major problems and affect the quality of life for both people and animals. People have been trying to be more careful with oil because it is destroying beaches and the water off the coast of these beaches. If everyone doesn't start becoming more conscientious with the environment, many plants and animals will become extinct.

There have been oil spills for hundreds of years. It is only recently that we have become aware of the negative effects it has on our environment. In 1989 there was a huge tanker that hit an iceberg and spilled eleven million gallons of oil into the ocean. Each time there is an oil spill the water, land and animals living there and even humans are affected. Birds and sea life are damaged the most. The oil will get on the bird's feathers which will prevent them from being able to fly. Birds could eat fish that have been polluted by the oil, and then they could get sick and die. Also, many sea animals that eat contaminated seaweed can get very sick. Humans have spent a lot of time researching ways to help clean up oil spills. One of the ways that scientists have cleaned up is to use bacteria that eats the oil. Another way that nature can help itself clean up after an oil spill is through evaporation. Humans can help too. We can suck up huge amounts of oil from the sea, and help to wash off polluted animals. These are only small steps, but they still help.

Over all, oil spills been controlled a lot in recent years. But there is so much more we can do to fix the problem. One of the main ways in which we can help is to stop old, rusty, oil tankers from even leaving the dock. We need to come up with safer boats that can transport oil safely from port to port. If we can make that minor adjustment, we can fix a very big problem.

All around the world, countries are cutting down trees in rain forests for wood and lumber. They are doing this in large amounts. Already in South America’s rainforests many trees have been cut down, and many more are getting cut down every day. Look at America’s forest in Washington. Basically, trees need some help right now.

The problem with cutting down trees is that animals live in forests. When a tree is cut down, the animal’s home may be destroyed and then the animal might become extinct. For example, the snowy owl is in danger. The reason is because we are cutting down many of the trees where it lives. That is happening to many other animals in the world also. Some of those animals are the panda bear and the leopard.

Another problem with cutting down trees is that they give off oxygen and we need oxygen to live. If we continue to cut down trees at the current rate, in 100 years there might not be enough oxygen to live.

However, there is some good news. Government officials in other countries are thinking of passing laws that would allow loggers to only cut down a certain amount of trees. And if they went over the amount, they would go to jail or pay a heavy fine. I also have a solution. We should never try and waste anything that comes from trees. Some examples are to use paper more than once by recycling. Schools should all have recycling programs so they don’t waste as much paper. If we do that, we will not have to cut down as many trees. So, just remember, save our trees!

This essay is on drugs affecting driving in our society. I think all recreational drugs should be cancelled! Innocent people are getting hurt or killed because of those driving under the influence and causing car accidents. This should come to an end. People should not be dying every day because of those bad choices people are making.

This is a serious problem because we need to know if people are driving under the influence. This is why the U.S. is going to plan a breathalyzer-like drug test. This is a great idea the U.S. has, but they need to educate young people about never using drugs at all. This year 120,000 teenagers entered treatment for the use of marijuana. That's 1/8 of the nation’s teenagers and most of them drive. That increases car crashes even more. "That is horrible!" said a Nevada resident, Gary Thompson, whose wife Sandy Thompson was killed at a stop light by a driver high on marijuana. That is unfair! A urine or blood test could show if anyone has smoked a joint within the past ten days. The amount of tar inhaled by marijuana smokers and the level of carbon monoxide absorbed are three to five times greater than that of cigarette smokers.

I think there should be changes because then there will be no more drugs and no more car accidents. A lot more people would be safer and not so many people will die young because of them. The breathalyzer-like drug test for drivers under the influence is a great idea. Then you will not have to take the drivers to a police station or a hospital to get a urine or blood test. If it works in the United States maybe other countries will try it. Lives could be saved all over the world.

Air pollution comes in many forms including smoke, dirt, trash, or toxic chemicals. Smog is also a form of air pollution. It is made up of all kinds of things. This affects our quality of life, which I think means good health and harmony.

In 1967 an infant girl named Kazue Doi was born in Japan. She started coughing blood right after being born. In less than a year she was dead. The doctors attributed her death to air pollution that her mother breathed in during pregnancy. Today, hundreds of millions of people have the same problem. They either get sick or they die. All of these people have breathed in sulfur dioxide. When people go to certain cities with heavy smog, like San Diego or Los Angeles, they sometimes come back breathing funny or painfully. When smog gets into your lungs, it stuns your cells. The immune system kicks in to protect your lungs, but those cells are stunned too. Then cellular fluids come into your lungs from the ozone and breathing becomes painful. Because of this, outdoor sports are sometimes moved indoors.

One way that we can prevent air pollution is to ban smoking. This may be a little part of air pollution, but we just need to stop a little bit at a time and one day we will have most of the air pollution gone and more lives will be saved. Also, we could ban factories from sending toxic chemicals into the air. Or we could let them send only a certain amount of toxic chemicals into the air a year. This is where most of the air pollution comes from, so it would be great if we stopped it. We could also stop littering because litter is what causes bad trash scents. This is also where a lot of dirt comes from.

These are great ways we can stop air pollution. All we need to do is stop and think about what air pollution is doing to us, and then think of things that we can do to make the quality of life better for everyone.

Diplomacy is the business of conducting negotiations between nations. The United Nations represents diplomacy because the members always try to keep world peace no matter what!

The United Nations is an organization with members from all over the world. The United Nations has 191 members in it. The United Nations was founded in 1945 right after World War 2 ended, with 51 original members.

There are many agencies connected to the United Nations, such as UNICEF. UNICEF stands for United Nations Children’s Fund. UNICEF was founded in 1946, and its role is to help children fight disease, and to give money to the children's families who can’t afford to pay for their sick child in a hospital. Another agency is WHO. WHO stands for the World Health Organization. WHO was founded in 1948 and its role is to give health equipment and doctors to poor countries that can’t afford it.

Another agency is The World Bank. The World Bank was founded in 1944, and its role is to lend money to poor countries, and builds dams, roads, power plants, and a lot of other projects. A recent example where the United Nations demonstrated the use of Diplomacy was when they passed a resolution to protect children during war. This resolution asked world nations to pay attention to the protection and welfare of children during wartimes and peace negotiations.

The United Nations wants the world’s nations to realize that children are innocent and are not related to war conflicts. The special representative of the United Nations, who is named Olara Otunnu, said “Children deserve special attention and require special protection. Moreover, children represent the hope and future of every society; destroy them and you have destroyed society.”

The conclusion is that the best example of diplomacy is the work that the United Nations does for the entire world.

Air pollution all around the United States is getting worse. Some things that can make air pollution worse are acid rains, greenhouse effect, smog, the ‘hole’ in the ozone layer, and more cars and factories. These problems can affect our health and the whole environment.

Air pollution can affect humans by making it hard to breathe. This happens because of the smoke from burning fossil fuels and the loss of oxygen. Another way air pollution can make it hard to breathe is because of the ‘hole’ in the ozone layer. This also exposes us to more ultra violet light, which leads to more skin cancer. Also polluted air can make it hard to exercise. The lack of oxygen and harmful air lead to feelings of shortness of breath. That is why many people need to exercise indoors.

Air pollution can affect the environment because it kills plant life and increases daily temperature. It doesn't just affect people; it also kills birds and animals.

How do we stop air pollution? The solution to this question is the government can make laws that factories cannot give out as much smoke and other chemicals. Another solution to this problem is cleaner fuels can be used in cars and trucks to lessen the amount of pollution. Also, people can plant more trees to filter the air. Another way people can stop air pollution is by walking or riding a bike, or using public transportation instead of driving cars.

Air pollution is very bad for the environment, and, unless we change our way of living, things will keep getting worse.
