Chapter 3 - World Peace President

Description

This is an independent writing activity for 10 classrooms — 5 from New York and 5 from outside the United States. Through reflection and research, students will nominate their candidate for World Peace President and provide a thirty-word essay on how their candidate would promote world peace.

Lesson Plan

Step 1 - Reflect
  • Words & Phrases - Prior to researching, students will be asked to start a list of words and phrases that define a World Peace President. This list will provide students with a starter list that will "sketch" a picture of their ideal candidate.

  • Who Fits This Picture? – Once students have made their list they will be asked to think about people that fit the description of their ideal candidate.

Step 2 – Research
Students will use a combination of their list of words / phrases and ideal leaders, and begin searching via the Internet and or through books.

List names of people that you think would be your ideal World Peace President by referring to your list of words and phrases.

Web site reference links are available on the Peace Diaries web site to help students to start their research.

Step 3 – Writing

Students are asked to now write their thirty-word essay on their final decision for World Peace President. As inspiration, students may refer to the following questions to help define their candidate. Also, students are asked not to name the individual in the essay because the name should not effect the students' vote in the primary elections.

  • Why did you choose this person?
  • Do you have a personal story that relates to this person?
  • What does the phrase, World Peace, mean to you?
  • What does the phrase, World Peace, mean to your candidate?
  • What advice would your candidate offer to world leaders about
    combating terrorism?
  • How is peace achieved through non-violence and what does it accomplish?

Step 4 – Oral Presentation

Students will present a brief oral presentation of their nominee for World Peace President to their classmates. Their peers will have the opportunity to ask questions, and the students must be able to defend their choice for nominee. The classmates will vote on their candidate for the Peace Diaries Primary.

Step 5 – Primary Election Day

All primary candidates', descriptions will be posted to the Peace Diaries web site. Students will cast their vote based on candidate’s attributes. The winning candidate will be revealed once all the votes have been cast.

Step 6 – Discussion

Were you surprised by who you chose based on his or her attributes? Students can discuss this in the classroom, or on the ePals discussion board with their global friends.
