Through reflection and research, students nominated their candidate for World Peace President in a brief essay. Because the Peace President should be selected on the basis of merit and character, students were asked to describe, but not to name, their candidate in the essay. Students then selected primary election candidates from essays written by their classmates. An election was held amongst all the students to select the woman or man who best embodies the qualities of peace that we all admire. The winner is revealed at the end of this chapter To see the Elected World Peace President 2002, click on the link below. |

This candidate is a school friend of ours, she is pacifist, fair, good character, respectful, she is cool, accountable and knows how to debate. Whenever she sees someone in need she helps them, she gives food to the poor, and chooses not to give money because she knows that it won't help. We think that someone our age will develop a healthy and peaceful attitude. Adults have too many pre-occupations and think too much. Our candidate thinks just like us kids. The Candidate: Clara G., a schoolmate of the students. |

To this father of faith, World Peace means to live in a friendly way. He has access to all the world leaders and can reach to all people around the world. Many go to speak to him about world problems, and often he gives good answers. He lives in Italy and he is Polish. Even though he is not of our religion, we know that he can help other people and we dont discriminate by religion. The Candidate: Pope John Paul is a small town boy from Poland who grew up to be Pope and a father of faith. Learn more about his life and work at http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/ |

We chose this person because she is intelligent, encouraging, respectful, articulated, reliable, pleasant and mature. She survived WWII, and she lives in Argentina now. After hard work she became the governor of her small community, helping poor children to learn computer skills, and become better students. As World Peace President she will help the poor and give them hope for the future, as she experienced hard situations and could overcome them. The Candidate: Bety Schreiner, is the Grandmother of Naomi, a student in Veronicas class. |

I think he is a good and solidary person, because he is a person that helped the invalid persons, the children and other persons of different social classes. He works in the television. He is a host of the programs "Sábado Gigante" and "Quièn Quiere Ser Millonario." His concerns are about the poor people and helping invalids that are in the Teletón. For me the words world peace mean that even if people that have one way of thinking or another that they respect each other. And that all are kind to each other, and don´t have fights, neither violence, and there is a free form of leaving to the world without fear to the rejection for the differences. My candidate says that to avoid the combats he would stop the arms career, so that wars don´t take place, and that they don´t use people for his benefit, but for the benefit of the whole community, also to try to solve the problems speaking and not fighting. For my candidate world peace mean the same thing that I find it. The non-violence achieved speaking through presidents and doing agreements, and clarifying the differences. I chose this person because he always dreamed about world peace. He didnt care about all the protests that were against him. He died for peace and his dream still stands. The Candidate: Yitzhak Rabin has been described as a Martyr for Peace. Read more about him at http://www.rabincenter.org.il:81/english/mainleft2.html |

He dedicated most of his life to fighting for India's independence. He did this in a peaceful, non-violent manner, which eventually paid off. He is admired by many for his willpower and mental strength. I believe that he would make the best peace president because of his high dignity and neutral way of solving conflicts. His solution to any problem was always well thought out and respectful of both sides. He would be the ideal peace president. The Candidate: Mahatma Gandhi said, "You must be the change you wish to see." Read more about him at http://www.mkgandhi.org/ |

He believes in education for all. He has been courageous and outspoken about our governments AIDS policies. He is committed to creating a better life for us all. The world peace leader of my dream is more important than a president. He/she's not always thinking about their self. They can't be lazy. A good world peace leader has to make sure he/she always has an empty space in their heart for someone to fill. And for the record, a good world peace leader can't be racist. Also, last but not least, he/she has to be smart so they can make decisions for the world. And make us feel as if the world is a comfortable and safe place and make us feel good about the world and about our self. The Candidate: An ideal peace leader described by a student in Dwelhas class. |

He is big and powerful. He will stop the violence in the word and stop making guns. And stop cutting down trees. No beer for kids! I picked him because he is good and mean. He helps people all over. He is a genius. He is great in sports. He's a good friend. He's heroic. He helps people and he is never late for a job. He's loyal to the people and he is not messy. He is mighty. He does not do it for money. He does it for fun. He is not nosey. He is not an outlaw and he likes to party a lot. He is playful. He like pets and he was popular in school. The Candidate: Goku, a character in Dragon Ball Z. |

I chose this person because he did many great things in his life. He helped the needy and fought for freedom. He went to jail many times for what he believed in. Many years later he became the president of South Africa. He never gave up no matter how many times people called him names and said negative things about his positive actions. World peace means that everyone could live in perfect harmony without the fear of having a family member killed in war. My candidate thinks world peace will bring a time when people don't hurt others physically or mentally. The Candidate: Nelson Mandela has been described, "As the world's most famous prisoner and, now, his country's leader. He exemplifies a moral integrity that shines far beyond South Africa." http://www.time.com/time/time100/leaders/profile/mandela.html |

Two Candidates tied for the primary elections: 1. I think this woman should be World Peace President because she is very talented and she obeys all the United States laws. She was in the court of law as a judge. She is very reliable and I think that this woman will be picked for World Peace President. The Candidate: Sandra Day OConnor is the first woman to serve as Supreme Court Justice. Read more about her at http://www.daretodream.org/sdoctext.htm 2. I think the World Peace President should be a man with a lot of money and smarts that knows business and computer skills. He will take care of the country and the world how it should be cared for. And, if there's a war, the World Peace President should take care of it in peace trying to stop a war. This person is also trustworthy and with manners and cares about the people of the world. ELECTED WORLD PEACE PRESIDENT 2002 NELSON MANDELA |
||||
| The moment to bridge the chasms that divide us has come. The time to build is upon us. We have, at last, achieved our political emancipation. We pledge ourselves to liberate all our people from the continuing bondage of poverty, deprivation, suffering, gender and other discrimination. We succeeded to take our last steps to freedom in conditions of relative peace. We commit ourselves to the construction of a complete, just and lasting peace. We have triumphed in the effort to implant hope in the breasts of the millions of our people. We enter into a covenant that we shall build the society in which all South Africans, both black and white, will be able to walk tall, without any fear in their hearts, assured of their inalienable right to human dignity - a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world. 1994 Inaugural Speech Nelson Mandela |
